JADUs Make a Real Difference to West Marin Housing Options

Point Reyes

The Community Land Trust Association of West Marin (CLAM) is utilizing Junior Accessory Dwelling Units (JADUs) to creatively respond to the need for housing in West Marin.  Their innovative program, Real Community Rentals, provides homeowners with incentives to convert their extra bedrooms into private rental units and assistance in renting the units and screening tenants. During our non-profit days, Lilypad Homes collaborated with CLAM to help develop the program. Since inception, Real Community Rentals has helped create nine new JADUs and provided tenant screening services in additional existing rental units, thus providing over twenty new rentals to local workers.

In this engaging video, CLAM illustrates how both homeowners and tenants benefit from creating junior units (JADUs). Two young tenants are interviewed to show the personal impact of creating housing in our communities, enabling local workers to remain in the communities they love. Their experiences illustrate how JADUs, though small spaces, are treasured homes.

“Living in a junior second unit is the best thing that’s ever happened to me because it’s all I need, and it forces me to live simply. And I get to share things with my land-mates and that also builds community.”

The two homeowners who share the landlord’s perspective of building and renting a junior units explain that they have been pleasantly surprised with the experience. By saying “Yes in my backyard”, each gained rental income, retained their privacy, and added a new sense of community to their daily lives through sharing their properties.
